Yes, cause needed: If the vaginal tear is due to intercourse and not a sexual assault, then washing with an antibacterial soap twice daily and a keeping it clean and dry will allow it to heal on its' own. Minor tears sustained during birth will heal spontaneously very quickly since the vagina has a strong blood supply (2-3 weeks). If it's been 1-2 weeks and you see no improvement, or you have pain or discharge or any odor, you should see your gynecologist. Due to the location, infections can occur commonly.

Yes: Obviously, the more extensive (i.e. Higher degree) the vaginal tear, the harder it is to repair and recover but with modern surgical techniques, it should be possible.  In fact, these techniques are so successful that we almost never see the sequelae of these injuries such as fistulas (openings between the rectum and vaginal or between the bladder and vagina) in this country any more.

Vaginal tear: At 53, sometimes intercourse can produce a tear in an estrogen depleted vaginal lining. The best treatment would be to use a pad and allow healing to take place for about two weeks. This, unless the tear is much more pronounced should be sufficient. If the tear is larger, suturing may be necessary, so if bleeding persists, see your gyn provider.
