Topical Azithromycin: My new medicine of choice, azasite, increases the rate of medical resolution to about 80% from 40 % if started in the first 3 days, combined with warm compresses  and continued for 10 to 14 days.  Occasionally surgical excision is needed to remove persistent focal inflamed scar tissue to allow quicker healing, 2 months, compared to natural resolution which may take 1 to 2 years to complete.

No Medicine: The best initial treatment for a stye is ...Heat.  Try warm compresses several times a day.  Use a facecloth and run under hot tap water...Don't burn yourself!

try this for about 1-2 weeks and the stye should resolve.

If it does not shrink or go away with this initial treatment...See your eye doctor.

Ophthalmic drops ok: Perhaps 1 in 200 people have a pharmacogenetic mutation which causes severe sensitivity to all the aminoglycosides, including gentamicin--but only if given IV or orally--and these people are at high risk of ototoxicity resulting in deafness.  Still, ask your pcp if it is ok, and check expiration date.

Warm compresses: coupled with an antibiotic ointment will help resolve the stye.  If it does not resolve after a week or so see an eye doctor.

Inflammed gland: A sty (stye) is an inflammed oil gland of the eyelid that appears as a red, tender pimple.  It is caused by a bacterial infection of the gland.  Usually, the sty drains & heals on its own.  If the gland becomes blocked, it is called a chalazion and may need to be lanced by a doctor.  You can treat a sty by applying a warm compress for 10 min 4x/day.  Do not squeeze it!

Very warm soaks: The best way to handle an early stye is to soak a washcloth in very warm (not hot) tap water for 4 minutes at a time at least 4-5 times per day.  This will get rid of most of them.  If persistent after several days of this, see your ophthalmologist.

Hordeolum: The medical term for a sty is a hordeolum. It is caused by a pore in your eyelid from a mucin or oil secreting gland becoming plugged up. These glands normally secrete mucin or oil into the tear film that is not only composed of water. When the pore is plugged up the oil/mucin accumulates in the eyelid tissue, rather than in the tears, and can become inflamed resulting in a growth that is a sty.
