No: There is no need to worry about ricin being in the castor oil, compared to all the other things we have to worry about in life. Castor oil may not be needed nor useful... which means one should investigate to see if castor oil has been truly proven to help in the way one is using it (castor oil has been around a long time and has many myths about it).

Ricin overdose : Ricin overdose results in nausea, diarrhea, tachycardia, hypotension and seizures. If the extend if your symptoms are swollen lips you should look elsewhere for the cause. If you feel that you have a serious problem, see your physician for an examination.

Time and Fluids: Meds for symptoms: uncontrolled vomiting (zofran, phenergan, compazine). Moderate diarrhea - imodium. Since most food poisoning is self-limited, pushing fluids and getting rest is best most of the time. If high fever, severe abdominal pain, bloody stools, or are sick for more than 48 hours, see a doctor! you may need antibiotics and IV fluids. Xifaxan (rifaximin) is a nice antibiotic for traveller's diarrhea.

When : When children overdose on cough medicine, it is not generally the alcohol that hurts them, but other ingredients. The most dangerous for kids are the decongestants, such as Pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. Some prescription cough syrups contain narcotics such as codeine, but it is difficult to overdose on this unless taken in doses larger than recommended. Alot of the hooplah over cold medicines in children is not only the fact that they can be overdosed on (which is true of any medicine), but that they don't make kids feel any better, so there is no benefit to having them on the market.
Now, if by "kids" you are referring to adolescents, you might be thinking about dextromethorphan containing cough syrup. It is not uncommon for you people to try to take these substances to get high. The effects of dextromethorphan in high doses include euphoria and hallucinations, but reasons that these folks end up in the hospital include tachycardia (fast heart rate), inability to urinate, and injuries due to doing stupid things while taking these drugs.

my niece who's 3 has been throwing up almost for 12 hours. no fever, no food poisoning. she can't even get any medicine she throws up. what can it be?

See a pediatrician: Your niece is at risk of becoming seriously dehydrated and should be seen by a doctor, both for diagnostic purposes as well as to check her for the secondary effects of inability to keep things down.  There are antinausea preparations that can be given by rectal suppository. Go and have her seen and hope she is better soon.
