Plantain allergy: English plantain is a weed that releases pollen in the Fall months and causes a form of hay fever, or allergic rhinitis.  Typical symptoms are sneezing, nasal/eye/ear itching, nasal drainage and congestion. If uncontrolled, sleep and the ability to perform well during the day are compromised.  The problem can lead to serious consequences like sinus infections.

are plantain allergies the same as banana allergies?

Not usually: Usually the plantain allergy discussed here in the states is to the pollen of the weed English Plantain, not food allergy to plantains (similar to bananas). An interesting fact about English Plantain is that, unlike typical weeds like ragweed that produce pollen in the fall, English Plantain produces pollen both fall AND spring, in a bimodal fashion. This photo is not E. plantain, however.

Stop taking it: If it is an extreme necessity, and there are no alternatives, and you don&#x27;t know whether this an allergic reaction or an adverse drug reaction (side effect), see an allergist/immunologist for evaluation and possible desensitization to the said drug for treatment of a particular disease episode, good luck

Chew it up: Common plantain, one of the most common lawn weeds, was known to native americans as snake bite weed.  I don't know of anyone who has used it for snake bites, but it's great for insect stings.  Take a leaf, chew it up until it's a pasty goo, then apply it to the insect bite for a few minutes.  The sting/itch/swelling will fade away.  Be careful you have identified it correctly first.

Various Options: Daily steroid or antihistamines nasal sprays (fluticasone, azelastine) are helpful. Determining exactly what you could be sensitized to in order to practice appropriate avoidance measures is also important. If medications and avoidance are not effective or not feasible allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) could be an option as well. Other meds include Sudafed, Mucinex, (guaifenesin) Afrin, oral antihistamines

Could be!: Without understanding the circumstances and the type of reaction, it is impossible to answer the question. If you started the new medicine, and experienced a reaction, it could be due to allergy to the medication.

No cure yet, but...: Allergy shots (allergen immunotherapy) is currently the only treatment that is disease modifiying, meaning it can change how the body responds to exposure to allergens.  It is "natural" and long lasting effects carry on after shots are stopped. It works for most, but not all people.  Closest thing to a cure so far..... OTC Allergy: Not fair. Truly, it is trial-and-error. What works best for you might not work best for someone else. Loratadine is the weakest binding non-sedating antihistamine; Cetirizine is the strongest binding non-sedating antihistamine. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) works better than both but it makes people sleepy.

how are drug allergies treated usually?

See below: It depends on the severity of the reaction. Certainly removal of the offending drug is the first step. Then medication to help with itching or hives, an antihistamine maybe needed. Also, steroids are some times used. And in severe cases, hospitalization maybe indicated.
