Low temperatures: Cold related illness would describe the group of conditions that are more common during low temperature seasons.  Although it is controversial about the exact reason, upper respiratory infections seem much more common as one example of a cold related illness.

All things equal: That is if you are immunocompetent and otherwise healthy, your recovery would be the same. We treat the symptoms only (except for flu as there is treatment now) for comfort. Rest and fluids is all you need otherwise.

are antibiotics targeted toward certain illnesses or do they generally fight off whatever infection is in your body? i am currently taking an antibiotic for a uti and caught a cold, wondering if this medicine will fight it off at all or only treat the uti

Antibiotics, : Antibiotics, when prescribed appropriately, are targeted to specific illnesses.  They're actually targeted to specific bacteria that we know are responsible for certain illnesses.

For example, most urinary tract infections are caused by a bacteria known as e. Coli, and we know that e. Coli is very sensitive to certain antibiotics.  So when you suspect or know that someone has a uti, you would give them an antibiotic that is effective against e. Coli.

That same antibiotic probably wouldn't work so well for a skin infection, which we know are typically caused by staph bacteria.  If someone has a skin infection, they may be given keflex, minocycline, or other drugs that are effective at killing staph.  Minocycline will probably do the trick for a skin infection caused by staph, but it may not do much for an e. Coli urinary tract infection.

No antibiotic is going to treat a virus, which is what causes the typical cold.  Sometimes cold symptoms are more than a viral illness, and could be representative of a bacterial bronchitis or pneumonia.  And if that's the case, you'd want an antibiotic that not only kills the bugs that we know cause pneumonia, like strep. Pneumoniae, but also penetrates into the respiratory tract.

All this being said, most antibiotics are wide spectrum enough to be multi-purpose, but that's a scary though.  Think about it this way, if you always use a nuclear bomb against a cockroach, someday that's not going to kill the cockroach.  And where does that leave you?

The use of the most specific antibiotic for whatever bacterial infection is going on, typically leads to just as many cures, fewer side effects, and less emergence of resistant bacteria.  We've only got so many antibiotics, and we're not developing new ones as quickly as we're burning through the old ones.

Next time a doctor suggests that you don't need an antibiotic, realize that he'd say the same thing to his wife, husband, son or daughter.

can expired medicine (cough&cold powder) cause food poisoning? child had slight cough&cold, gave meds (child reported no bad taste), saw theyd expired. 6hrs later vomiting/diarrhea/99.8* temp. result of bad meds or did illness just progress?

Likely unrelated: Such meds get weaker after expiration date but seldom lead to the symptoms you list.It it did you would see them in the 1st hour after it was given. This is likely illness progression.

i am suffering from cold urticaria since six month.i was prescribed many medicine but they don't work at all.i want permanent cure from this disease.

Cold urticaria: So does everyone with cold urticaria, one of several "physical urticarias". It is usually very bothersome, usually doesn't involve the respirator tract and can be difficult to control. It rarely can be associated with cold agglutinins a possible marker of more severe underlying disease. See a board certified allergist for evaluation and treatment.

is it a problem if i take cold medicine and i have sickle cell disease?

Could: Cold meds with stimulants like psuedophedrine can raise the heart rate and blood pressure. Sickle cell pts dont do well under stress conditions and this could cause an undue stress on those pts sensitve to these meds. Would stick with chlorocedin-hbp wich is a decongest med without the stimulation side effect. Its over the counter and has a pic of a heart on label.

Mental disorders: All medications have potential risks. As with any medication, psychotropic medications potential benefits should outweigh potential risks to prescribe a particular medication.

Herbs: Several, depending on the type of illness. Usually, antioxidants are my favorite, to boost your immune system.

It depends  what ?: Mental illness she has and what medication we r talking about. Most likely she will have  relapse of her symptoms and get worse, best thing have her talk with her psychiatrist.

Risk of Sauna: The same risks of sharing a closet with one or more complete strangers.   The sweating is not the issue, but the close confinement with others bratheing is.  Then compounded with an environment that would allow a viruse to survive longer outside of the body.
