occasionally i get this dull pain that starts in the bottom row of my teeth, radiates to jaw, mastoid process/occipital bone and ear. the pain is a 6-7, and only happens on right side. not occurring over often, but what could be wrong? its painful?

: There are textbooks full of possibilities. Anything from wisdom tooth inflammation to abscessed teeth to neurologic disorders too malocclusion to pernicious habits to..... Start with your General Den test. If everything is healthy then next stop is your General Physician. If everything there is clear, your Dentist and your Physician may refer you to specialists for evaluations.

mastoid bone became swollen and painful to touch 2 days ago. redness & pain went away overnight.it is still a hard bump though. what is it?

See your doctor: After your doctor has taken a look she will advise if you need dental follow up, biopsy or antibiotics.  She will also get a full history to find out if trauma was involved.

Prob. Lymph node: Time to check for dental, facial, ear or scalp infections. Unless there are more painful lumps, then it could be a systemic disease.

Lumps/nodes: These sound like lymph nodes which can occur at these sites behind the ears or at the base of the neck.  Often it may be related to a scalp condition (skin infection, sores) if there are no other signs of these in your lower neck areas.  Hair products, dyes, ?tattoos are other considerations possibly causing this swelling.  F/U with MD if not resolving over a few weeks.

Unlikely: It is impossible to have a mastoid infection without a middle ear infection. The tendons of the large neck muscles attach on the mastoid bone and you could have either a tendonitis or myositis.  The lump where the ear meets the jaw could be the parotid gland tail.  See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis.

Many causes: This problem mandates a real-time (face-to-face) meeting with a doctor.  A history has to be taken along with a examination as well as labs and other tests.  Only after all this will your doctor be in a position to tell you what's wrong and what needs to be done to help you.

Confusing: Fullness in the mastoid is a symptom, and using the term mastoid cells is a radiological diagnosis.  I am guessing that your doctor ordered mastoid x-rays and the radiologist identified minimal degree of fluid in the mastoid air cells.  The mastoid bone behind your ear only gets involved if you have a middle ear infection (hearing loss).  So we need more specific information on your complaint.
