At 40 you reach a point where the risk of a Down syndrome birth has increased to about 1% but all pregnancies have about 4% overall risk of some unexpected outcome (cleft, premi, sickness, etc.) the risks are there for all to some degree. Mom had a happy outcome at 42 ; many have them later. Discuss with your doc ; follow your heart.

Many not so smart people smoke, and they do not get any brighter afterward. It can be psychoaddictive and can tempt you to smoke and do nothing else. That is indeed not productive, if not dumb.
