Vast number: Of diseases. This can be caused by any neurologic insult, infectious issues, metabolic issues, etc. Coma is a very vague medical term that people don't use often in medical terminology because it does not tell us much. I am sorry i cannot be more direct with an answer, but without more history, i cannot clarify it any further. Again, the list is immense that can cause someone to fall into a coma.

Accepted Answer

Ethical question: The vast bulk of healthcare costs, and efforts occur within the last 2 weeks of life.  Eventually, we are going to have to grapple with this and arrive at decisions for terminal people.  You see, we already have a fairly good idea as to how most of our pts will fare. Guess we just need more precise ways of predicting the future.

A coma is a: Prolonged state of unconsciousness, during which a person is unresponsive to his or her environment, is alive and appears to be sleeping, but, unlike being in a deep sleep, the person cannot be awakened by any stimulation, including pain. I do not think there is a minimum time frame but, according to www.Brainandspinalcord.Org, a coma can last for a few seconds, or can last for years.

Maybe: Depends on why they are in the coma as to whether or not their hearing nerve pathways might be working.  Your doctors may or may not be able to tell you.  Certainly, it can't hurt to talk to a friend or loved one in a coma.  Best wishes.

They may die: If someone in coma is kept alive by artificial means and those means are taken away, someone would die.  People in coma may still have brainstem functions left which would mean they could still breathe on their own.  These people may not die if you "pull the plug".

It depends on what: you mean by "helping".  Most doctors do not know much about reflexology and I am one of those docs, so I cannot tell you.  All I can tell you is that the prognosis of a coma depends on what put the patient into a coma in the first place.  I would be tempted to say that it cannot hurt, but then again, I would not know.  Check with a local reflexologist or somebody with experience in eastern med.

No fixed answer: This question can only be answered on an individual basis. There are too many variables to answer here. The range is from one second (concussion) to never (permanent coma).

Yes: The Glasgow scale indicates the level of responsiveness of an individual who has experienced some form of brain trauma.  At a score of 9, the individual is surely responsive
