For constipation: take Senna.  Senna is a very safe natural plant product with a wide dosage range.  Start by taking 2 tablets at bedtime, if you do not have a comfortable bowel movement (BM) the next day, take 4 tablets the next night.  You can continue to increase the dose by 2 tablets every night until it works.  It is safe to continue the dose that works every night in order to have a comfortable BM daily.

Different: Magnesium citrate is different than milk of magnsesia. Look for citrate in a colored glass bottle usually. Ask the pharmacist if you cannot find it. It is a clear liquid and will cause BM fairly soon after you ingest it so I advise to take it at home. Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) will also cause a bowel movement but not as rapidly.

Milk of magnesia usually works between 30  min 6 hours.  Unclear when you took the prune juice in relation to the MOM.  To avoid constipation is drink plenty of fluids 2-3 liters a day  and have some high fiber food like greens, berries, sweet potatoes .

Magnesium: Yes.  Worse case scenario would be that she would have loose stool.  Perfectly safe, though.

They are similar.: Both milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) and magnesium citrate are osmotic laxatives, drawing water into the bowels and stimulating bowel motility. Used in similar doses, they should act about the same, although certainly one may be better then the other in a particular patient. You have to learn what works best for you. It is advisable not to use laxatives on a regular basis. Good luck
