Safety: It is considered as safe to eat as any other vegetable food. However, maca does contain glucosinolates, which can cause goiters when high consumption is combined with a diet low in iodine. Darker colored maca roots (red, purple, black) contain significant amounts of natural iodine, a 10-gram serving of dried maca generally containing 52 µg of iodine.  It is uncertain if maca can worsen a goiter.

MACA is GREAT: www.pubmed.gov; only a few studies have been performed but both these and ethnobotanical experience show this herb to be effective in treating sexual dysfunction including that which is related to side effects of anti-depressants.  Very few negative effects are reported and they are vague.  Some suggestion of interference in thyroid patients is postulated.

Don't stop prenatals: If you're pregnant, you need to take prenatal vitamins, whatever else you're taking. You and your baby need the extra vitamins far more than you need an herbal supplement.
