Throat infection ? : You might be having an infection in your throat or tonsils. The pain in your ears is called referred pain. Infection?: Lymph nodes can enlarge in the neck in response to infection.  However, if an upper respiratory infection goes away and there is still enlargement that persists, it should be evaluated by a doctor.  Infrequently, enlarged lymph nodes can be related to lymphoma, a type of cancer.

i have swollen lymph nodes on the side of my neck and behind ear. some of them hurt. i have had them for a month. is this serious?

Likely benign, but: The neck is a very common place for mild lymph node enlargements. We do about 5-6 lymph node biopsies a day-from the neck-and most of them are benign. However if rapid growth is noted, or if bigger than 3cm, or if other symptoms develop you need to have it checked. The most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck are a viral illness, a dental infection, skin infection and "other".

See a physician: sounds like posterior occipital lymphadenothpy ( a swelling of lymph nodes around the posterior ear and base of the skull):  must be seen and evaluated.

Mononucleosis: Classic description of the viral illness mononucleosis. Contagious by oral contact.Self-limited, but can be chronic.No antimicrobials are needed since this is viral, but secondary streptococcus infection could require treatment. In some cases the spleen can enlarge and even rupture, so limited activity is sometimes recommended. Good luck.

Need to examine: Probably ok as it has been there for years. You may feel the nodes every couple of weeks, if any of the lymph glands doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, or lose weight, you should see a doctor.
Have a healthy diet, exercise, drink plenty of water, have safe sex, if you do, and get HPV vaccine,. Wish you good health.

daughter just found bony bump behind ear.  hard smaller then a bb.  pcp says no lymph nodes thinks cartilage. bone spur? no xrays done. i'm worried??

Not sure: Since it is smaller than a BB it is probably nothing to worry about.  X rays are not likely to show much in this area.  Just keep an eye on it and if it should start getting larger, then ask again for an evaluation.  Meanwhile, ask her not to rub or mess with it (or you either!)  Just check once a week or so.
