Sample for pathology: Lymph node biopsies can be performed with needles that take clumps of cells or cores of tissue to analyze for pathology.  Often, lymph nodes adjacent to malignant tumors are removed totally to determine whether or not the tumor has spread.  Just nodes may be removed to diagnose diseases such as lymphoma.

No: Lymph nodes can be biopsied using fna (fine needle aspiration), but it is easier to take the entire node out, subtotal or wedge biopies may not heal and leave larger scars.

DEPENDS: Your physician (hopefully an id) can guide the workup of your disease, which may be infectious, malignant, inflammatory, or reactive. Blood tests may be available, but another biopsy may be the most direct method.

Generally yes: This is often an out-patient surgery, and depending upon the location of the lymph node and the extent of exploration necessary, you should be able to work the next day, although you might need some mild pain control for local discomfort at the site biopsied.  If this is a needle biopsy you will probably not need anything.

An : An "abnormal" result may or may not be serious.

A serious result is one that is a malignant diagnosis, i.e. Cancer.  The cancer may be a "primary" in the lymph node system, i.e. Malignant lymphoma, or a metastatic tumor that has spread from a cancer originating in a distant site such as lung or gastrointestinal tract.  If malignant lymphoma is the diagnosis, additional malignant lymph node tissue may have to be obtained for additional tests to determine the exact cell of origin so that appropriate therapy can be planned.  If when the original lymph node biopsy was performed, the processing laboratory saved some of the biopsied tissue for these tests, additional surgery may not be necessary.  If the abnormal result is tumor that has spread to the lymph node from a distant site, additional testing will have to be performed to determine the site of the cancer's origin and whether the offending cancer site is amenable to surgical removal.

An "abnormal" result that is not serious is generally one in which the lymph node is said to show signs of "reactive" activity to a systemic viral disease or shows signs of an infection limited to the node itself or an infection in a distant or regional organ, e.g. Tuberculosis in the lung may spread to a lymph node in the neck, showing signs of infection there.  This is an important sign for the need of anti-tuberculous antibiotic therapy.  There may also be signs of an infection that cannot be treated with antibiotics, and additional enlarged lymph nodes are presumed to have the same infection and require surgical removal.

Lymph node biopsy: Most physician would prescribe an antibiotic and wait a couple of weeks before suggesting an FNA(fine needle aspirate).  If the node is firm and feels fixed to the underlying tissue a biopsy would be wise.  If its swollen and painful and has an obvious cause (such as a local skin infection), waiting while antibiotics have a chance to cool things down is fine.  Speak with your doctor.

Usually a couple of: Days.  Uncomplicated lymph node biopsy can be read with a couple of days of the biopsy. However special tests may take longer, even a couple of weeks depending on the investigation needed.
