Not uncommon: Lupron (leuprolide) works initially by causing your pituitary gland to release fsh and lh. This explains why it is used in certain ivf protocols. In patients taking Lupron (leuprolide) for endometriosis patients can sometimes experience some worsening of their symptoms initially and then improvement after a couple of weeks. A 15 mm cyst is relatively small...Usually the follicle (cyst that contains an egg) reaches 20 mm.

No is not: I would say something is not right. The pelvic pain may not relate at all to lupron (leuprolide). See your doctor. He will know for sure what to do.

Different: Lupron (leuprolide) gives you a (temporary) chemical menopause, thus no period. By not stimulating the ovaries the symptoms of endometriosis might improve. Bcp are also commonly used, also put the ovaries "at rest", but different mechanism.

No: Lupron (leuprolide) will help prevent recurrence while you are on it. However, Lupron (leuprolide) is usually used short term and it may recur after you stop it. Drugs such as birth control pills can be used long term and so may be more helpful.  Still, going on hormones after surgery is not absolutely necessary.

Lupron (leuprolide) Works: Lupron (leuprolide) clearly best method to totally shut off reproductive cycle and cyst formation. You could ask your OB gyn about changing pills but most combination ocps work about the same.

Patience vs. Surgery: Most ovarian cysts in young women are "functional cysts", which evolve from a follicle that you ovulate from, then grow and finally resolve spontaneously over several weeks.  Birth control pills do not speed up the resolution, but do decrease recurrences.
If the cyst persists then surgery, often laparoscopic, is necessary to remove the cyst and have it tested for cancer.

Depends on many fact: Factors like the size, is it a simple cyst or not , is there any pain or not , if it is a simple fluid filled benign looking cyst that is not too large or causing too much pain then often times birth control pills can shrink the cyst and prevent future cysts from forming, if it is not simple then the diagnosis and txment options are totatlly differnet so the gyn can discuss all of this with you.

ovarian cyst causing bleeding in pregnancy. how do you treat this?

Accepted Answer

Wait it out: If you are in the first trimester, unless the bleeding is coming from a single spot on the cervix (friable) that could be treated with silver nitrate- there isn't a way to treat bleeding in pregnancy. We typically recommend pelvic rest, and if you are further along in the pregnancy due to contractions then there are treatments to try to stop contractions, but o/w no reliable way to treat the bleed.
