Bursitis : This may be an inflammation in the little sack or bursa just over the patella. It normally helps everything "slide" when you bend your knee, but can get irritated, especially if you did a lot of kneeling or caused some inflammation to start. If it is red and painful, it may even be infected so you should get it checked. Try an antiinflammatory in the meantime. Try not to kneel until it is healed.

Knee cap: Patella is another name for knee cap, Do you have it below or at the lower part of the knee cap. It may be bony spicule. If it does not get bigger and painless, nothing to worry. If changes it is worth getting a xray to evaluate through your physician

Let me try to help: Is this lump new or old? Did you have injury to the knee? If you do most likely it is bursitis in front of the knee cap?
Normally that  bursa is flat and can not feel it but when it injured have some fluids in it. Go and check it out.

Patellar pain: Patellar pain syndromes are quite common in young female athletes. They are typically due to patellar tracking abnormalities or patellofemoral syndrome. The hard lump you feel could be a bone fragment called "bipartite patella", or less likely a "ganglion cyst". See a sports medicine doctor for physical exam and maybe an x-ray or MRI.

Painful hardware?: By your discription can't tell if you had repair of a fractured patella or ruptured patellar tendon.  Either way it is possible to have pain and swelling related to a prominent screw or wire or perhaps non-resorbable suture.  If not getting better repeat surgery not unresonable to explore area in question.

See orthopedist: The bump can represent soft tissue scarring or possibly fluid. Difficult to tell based on you description.  Best to see an orthopedist and have x-ray done to evaluate fully.
