Many things: Could be taut muscle band or muscle spasm called a tender point or a trigger point.  This could also be a tender lymph node, especially if you were recently sick.  Other things could be a boil or a lipoma.  If it is bothering you and does not resolve, see your doctor for further evaluation.

Watch it: Lumps on the neck are usually lymph nodes. These are factories that collect debris along the lymphatic tract. When we are sick, the nodes increase in size and work to clean things up. If your son has had a cold, sore throat, scalp sores, the node may be reacting to this. If he is not ill, the lump is red warm and hard, or the lump is not softening in the next few weeks get him checked.

Neck lumps: If you're feeling lumps on both sides of your neck, they're probably cervical lymph nodes.  Other neck lumps include sebaceous cysts, but it'd be uncommon for these to occur symmetrically. I'd recommend getting them checked out by your doc in the next 1-2 weeks - nothing urgent unless you're having fever, difficulty swallowing, or increasing pain.  Then see your doc sooner.

Lump?: Normal? You have lymph nodes, glands, vessels, muscles, thyroid glands, and many other structres that may feel like a lump wit hit being normal but may be abnormal.  Depending on how long it has been there and if it bothers you, and other symptoms have your PCP check it out.

Normal lymph node: We have lymph nodes scattered throughout our body & they are often detected in the neck where they sit on top of neck muscles. These nodes are little fluid strainers that take body lymph & remove stray germs and debris from things like bug bites. They are often pea sized at rest & grow to dime sized when working. Within 2-3 wks they often shrink back down unless they are stimulated further.
