: I would start by visiting your family doctor.  There are many things that could cause that for you.  Your family doctor may be able to treat it for you, or they would be able to refer you to a specialist that certainly would be able to help you.  Now if you have a sharp increase in pain before you are able to see your family doctor, I would go directly to the emergency room for evaluation.

This is generally considered a surgical emergency and can be life threatening. Generally speaking all hernias should be looked at by a surgeon as soon as they appear. The smaller a hernia is, the easier it is to repair.
