Pain in the low back: Spine vertebra look like a dense circle of bone with an Eiffel Tower sitting atop. Spinal cord lies between the legs of the tower, and discs sit over the body (dense circle of bone). towers touch at the bases at FACETS, joints, which glide with spine movements. As these become worn (arthritic) movement causes inflammation. Spinal nerves exit the cord behind the bodies.  All get irritated and pain.

A bandage?: May provide transient relief, assuming the diagnosis is correct. If you have pain bending backward, the diagnosis is likely. Facet arthitis is caused by degenerative arthitis of the facet joints. Better options are nsaids  and exercise!

Facets: The lumbar facets are deep in the back on the lateral portion of the spine.  They can not usually be felt .  What you do feel may be some isolated areas of spasm.  If the bump you feel is in the center it is the spinous process of the vertebrae which sticks out and I'd readily felt

Not the standard Rx : We don't use oral Prednisone to treat the lumbar facet disease. It is a type of osteoarthritis or wear and tear arthritis. Sometimes we can inject the facet joint. Your best treatment is physical therapy also.

It could be facet: Pain, but often during laminectomies they obliterate the medial branch that feeds the facet, so it is not the only possibility and other things, like post-laminectomy syndrome, should be considered. A diagnostic block of the medial branch can be an easy way to find out if those small nerves are causing the pain or not. Pt should still be in the discussion as well.
