Not long: You go home right after.  A distance of 1 arm's length should be maintained between the person treated & others who spend more than 2 hours next to the patient in any 24 hour period. Brief contact is acceptable, but sleeping together, watching tv, going to movies, long car/plane trips should be avoided for about 11 days after treatment.  Drink lots of water and flush twice.  Don't share food.

No: Keep and eye on the area and if it becomes red, hot, tender and painful, swollen or shows a discharge that looks like pus, see a doctor.  Otherwise it should heal ok.

Preparation: Some diagnostic centers ask patients to undergo a 2 week low-iodine diet prior to a thyroid uptake and scan. This is because the study uses radioactive iodine (i-123 or low i-131) for the test. The iodine contained in food (seafood, table salt, etc.) may compete with the iodine used for the study, and thus results may be biased.Ideally, for the study your thyroid gland should be "hungry" for iodine.
