Yes: A low mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (mchc), even in the absence of a low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) or low rbc count can be a sign of a evolving microcytic anemia. Microcytosis can be caused by iron deficiency (check ferritin level) or thallesemia (check hemoglobin electrophoresis). Hope that this helps.

Need data: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to have the actual data, rather than your interpretation of "tad low". For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Anaemia: A haemoglobin of 9.5 is low. If you took an iron containing supplement and your haemoglobin went up to 10.3 it is very possible you were iron-deficient. But you need to get this investigated, especially if you are consuming an otherwise healthy diet. The underlying reason for the anaemia needs to be determined.

If this is thalassemia minor, you need to know before you marry someone else who has it and have a child with an unexpected grave birth defect. If this is "mild iron deficiency", the cause needs to be found -- anything from heavy monthly losses to ill-advised vegetarianism to a bleeding ulcer or tumor.

If you are a male, you need to consult a GI specialist to rule out bleeding in your stomach and intestine.
