No: prevent new ones: The traditional 'blood thinners' prevent the formation of new clots, but do not dissolve existing ones.  That is left to the body's own natural defences.

i'm on lovenox inj 2x a day and coumadin (warfarin) for two tiny pe's. can i develop another pe while on them. i had no symptoms of my first ones. i'm scared.

Pulmonary embolism: Can be fatal if they are big enough.  When your doctor investigated its source, he probably could not find it, if he did not recommend any other treatment.  You should be on anticoagulants to minimize recurrence.  And you should stop taking any meds that might predispose you, such as birth control pills, and stop smoking if you do smoke.  Talk to your doctor on how to minimize your future risk.

Can be a factor: Flax seed oil makes platelets more slippery and therefore reduce clotting.  When combined with Coumadin (warfarin) this can be a factor for increasing bleeding and potentially dangerous.  Close followup with your physician to monitor your protimes will help to reduce this risk and allow you to enjoy the benefits of the flax seed oil.

are there any symptoms when switching from coumadin (warfarin) to lovenox? i have felt so tired and worn out since i switched. is there a correlation?

Unlikely:  I recommend a physical examination &amp; complete blood count.

how long before a patient taking coumadin (warfarin) to have a controlled inr. it has been 2 months and my last inr was 7.2? taking 15mg. is lovenox better ?

Overdose: That is too high already!  the goal is to have INR in the range of 2-3 generally unless your doctor had other plan.

can you tell me if lovenox is used in house for treatment purposes, is there any reason not to go ahead and start coumadin (warfarin) on day 1?

You can: It will take about 5 days for Coumadin (warfarin) to become therapeutic. It makes sense to start on day one. (i do).

This is common. : Warfarin (Coumadin) is often held for several days, typically for a procedure.  A “bridge” strategy for those at higher risk for recurrence of a clot is sometimes used, one that can be stopped or reversed for the procedure, then restarted. The blood thinning effects of warfarin take too long to start/stop to permit this. Enoxaparin (Lovenox), is an excellent “bridge”.

The fact: That you are on both drugs suggests this is a new diagnosis. The swelling improves in weeks.  In severe DVT the valves in the veins can be permanently damaged and this leads to some degree of swelling which is permanent.

my mom is on coumadin (warfarin) and lovenox but her inr is only 1.3. she recently had a stroke nd dvt. isnt she at  risk of another stroke with low inr?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: Effect of Lovanox is not reflected in the INR. Did she start coumadin (warfarin) recently? Both are given till INR is more than 2 or 2.5 depending on the clinical circumstances.
