3 stages: There are 3 stages: nit (egg), nymph (smaller version of adult), and adult. Time from egg to having another egg develop is one month.

Yes: Many are not able to find the lice. If there's one & your kid isn't totally bald, there will be others. A simple otc rx may work  well with your situation. If there are visible nits(egg casings), they have been there at least 10 days & you will need to monitor for a while after rx and removal of all nits.

In theory: It does take about 10 days for lice to begin laying eggs, but I would suspect you just didn't see them.They are laid at the hair line where the lice usually stay.As the hair grows (1/2 in/m) they push out from the scalp.I'd go back an look for several days.

Lice or scabies or?: Although scabies usually doesn't affect the scalp, if it were, it would be behind ears and at base of head.  Shaving your hair off would usually have treat pediculosis (lice).  Have your doctor evaluate you.  Treat you scalp/body with a scabicide such as permethrin as directed, or perhaps ivermectin.  Scabies is caused by a skin-burrowing mite, so would not be affected by shaving. Could be fungal.

I think the first: ....thing you should do is find out if it IS lice.  It's virtually impossible to see your own head SO SEE A DOCTOR!.  Other things can cause this creepy-crawly sensation, certain cold medications for example, but lice definitely need to be looked for before you start wondering what else it could be.  Dr. Anne

Lice: If by infested you mean catch it from someone else - when the adult lice move to your head you may not feel any symptoms. As they start to hatch new ones you may notice many more and have more symptoms. This typically happens 6-12 days after exposure.  Life cycle of a louse is 9-15 days.  This is also why treatment should happen twice to get two life cycles.

Sebaceous Dermatitis: You might have dandriff or a dermatitis.  Go see your family doc.  You may need a special shampoo.  Lice may still be a possibility.

Earbuds are ok: Lice prefer hair and scalp, but they run around quickly and could end up on headphone head bands (although it seems unlikely to happen). Earbuds are ok, because there is almost no place for the lice to hide. If a person is worried about using somebody else's headphones, he can keep them in a plastic bag for 2 or 3 weeks before using them. By then, the lice should have died.

Nix (permethrin): Nix- (permethrin lotion) apply to the head at bedtime and wash off in the morniing. Wash all your bedclothes and put them through the dryer, and vacuum your carpets.

Check package instru: The lice removal kits  you purchase at the store usually give you a shampoo for the initial treatment. They are also supposed to include a special comb to help strip the eggs off the hair. Please carefully read the package instructions or speak to your pharmacist when using one of these kits.
