Many reasons: The most common and likely cause of cracking/popping in front of the knee is an irritated or early wear of the knee cap cartilage or the surface cartilage of the thigh bone that it rubs. Other causes could include a meniscus tear, plica, patellar tendonitis etc. Some fluid build up in the knee causes cracking. Try therapy, antiinflammatories, ice and sometimes a knee sleeve. See orthopedist.

Depends: If the symptoms are present for more than a couple of days (catching, locking, instabilty, feeling like your knee is giving out), than you should have it evaluated.  If you can't move the knee or can't walk on it, then you should go to the er, or be seen sooner.

Meniscus tear or : Possibly a patellar subluxation. Those are the most common reasons for a pop in the knee with an impact. Ligament and ACL injuries are usually non contact and associated with instability. If your pain is on the inside of the knee could be a meniscus. If it is in the front of the knee most likely kneecap subluxation. Ice nsaids and time. If not better then see a doc.

Hard to say: May be  cartialge like  meniscus,  may be  kneecap - the patella, could even be a small fracture. The fact that it is better is good. After this  you would  want to ice it for 20 minutes  3-4 times  today and tomorrow. An evaluation by a  knee  othopedic surgeon or  rheumatologist  may have you an answer. You may imaging like X-ray or MRI.

Ice and elevate: Normally when one hears a " pop " during an athletic injury a tendon, ligament or meniscus has been damaged. The standard of care is RICE, rest, ice, compression and elevation. It would be normal to hurt for a period of time, days to weeks. The key is if it improves or worsens. After a week if there is no improvement you need to be seen. If pain or function worsens you need to consult. Take care.

See an Ortho Dr: you should rest, ice, compress, elevate the knee. Make an appointment to get it looked at. May need an xray and some manual testing to see what's wrong.

Accepted Answer

No: It is unlikely that the PCL would tear with a minor tripping episode.  It is usually torn with a hyperextension injury or with a direct blow or fall on a flexed knee.  The important thing is whether or not your not your knee is still symptomatic.  If its been a few weeks and the knee is still feeling loose or unstable, you should probably have it checked out by a trained professsional.

when standing up from a prone position my l knee made two loud popping sounds followed by immense pain, swelling 4 days later. is this an acl issue ?

Unlikely: More likely to be a meniscus tear. Would be unusual to rupture an acl without significant trauma. With pain and swelling after 4 days its time to see your doctor.

knees make clicking/popping noise using stairs. like knuckles popping but not as loud. what could it be and how do i make it stop? kinda hurts/grinds.

Arthritis: Noises without pain may be normal, but with pain maybe inflammation or cartilage changes
not weight bearing exercise may help
swimming is best.
