Constipation: Yes. Of course. In fact in some circles when one is severely constipated if they drink three liters of water in one to two hours they will most likely be able to get the stool to move.

: Fat in stool suggestive one eats much fatty food especially hydrogenated fats in fried foods or has digestive issues with bile and Gallbladder. The Gastroenterologist is who to see. Since water does not dissolve fat. Drinking much water has little or no effect

Oily stool: The amount, color, frequency of stool varies with foods, speed of emptying of the GI tract, medications ; supplements ingested, gut flora (unique for each individual), additives (like blood), subtractions (like absent bile), infection, inflammation, ; other factors.  You are describing steatorrhea--due to maldigestion, pancreatic insufficiency, ingestion of olestra or orlistat, high fat intake...

Not usually.: Usually, if you drink a lot of liquids, your kidneys will just excrete that liquid and your stool will remain the same. However, being dehydrated may make your stool firmer, so it is a good idea to drink a moderate amount of liquid to prevent stools being too firm.

Hydration: Drinking water is essential to keep health bowel movements.  The bowel usually absorbs the water it needs from the stool.  If you drink too little water, this can make the stool too dry and hard to pass.  If you drink enough, stools should pass smooth sailing, generally speaking.  Other factors related to constipation and loose stools as well.  If concerned, see your doctor.

is it normal for stools to look darker before they hit the water? i swear, mine look almost black at first. (but i also notice lots of reddish brown mucus around submerged stool so maybe that's why?)

Might not be...: Stool color can vary a lot by diet. But, dark stools are typical when there is blood incorporated in the stool. Especially blood from higher up in the GI tract, e.g., your stomach. I think you should have this checked out. Tested to see if it is blood. If you are bleeding somewhere in your GI tract, it needs to be diagnosed and treated asap.

Go to ER now: You are having bleeding from the upper gastro intestinal tract.

Loss of blood is the cause of fatigue &amp; wanting to sleep a lot.

Drink plenty of fluids.

i have been having hard-to-pass pebble-like stool for my whole life. i eat right and drink lots of water. can stool softeners be taken long term?

Yes and no: Your stool reflects your diet. Make a diet diary of what you eat for a week. Foods that cause constipation are the grains such as rice, oats, barley. Also foods that have lots of pectin (bananas) and milk. Stop these for a week and your stool will soon change.

occasional floating stool, always looks shiny, always brown. sometimes clear film on water. i eat a lot of both fat and fiber. 22 y/o. reason toworry?

Fat in stools: if your weight is normal ( meaning you eat and gain weight normally) ( and not--- eat a lot but not able to gain weight) --- basically I am referring to malabsorption issues with gut---- you should be ok. If concerns about malabsorption --- from gut--- please see a GI specialist
