what are the long term effects of being on nasonex (mometasone) and allergy meds (switch between different ones... zyrtec, allegra, claratin) it's been many years?

Not to worry : There are no significant reported long term adverse effects of nasal  steroids in studies. Direct , local effects are more common like irritation in the nose, crustiness, nosebleeds. You just take a short break from the rx for these. There are no major reported concerns about long term use of antihistamines.- zyrtec, claritin, allegra,  etc.

Usually ok: Unless you have a cardiovascular problem such as hypertension or insomnia from the pseudoephedrine.

Anti-histamines: These drugs are safe. The 'd" part of claritin-d is not the best choice for long term use and regular Claritin (loratadine) may be that much better for daily or long term use. But, in general these medications are safe.

Prob ok: Antihistamines have been around for decades, and certainly many more potent than loratadine. They say worldwide the most common drug taken is diphenhydramine, mostly for the sedative properties (as a sleep aid). Antihistamines can affect certain types of glaucoma, and accentuate urine retention in those with prostate issues and dry mucous membranes, but usually not so much with loratadine per say.

headache is getting worse. i have been on claritin, (loratadine) flonaz, and zyrtec but nothing seems to help long-term. any suggestions?

Evaluation: I would recommend that you confirm with your provider if allergies are the reason for your headache.  You have used allergy medications to treat your headache and apparently have not had benefit.   I think it may be likely that your headache is not allergy related at this point.

my dr prescribed claritin (loratadine) for a skin reaction, but its no longer effective. can i take a second dose so i can get a decent night's sleep?

Caution: the maximum dose for Claritin is 10mg per day. So if you took 5 mg before, you can certainly take one more. Otherwise, try some skin lotions to moisturize the skin. Don't bathe or shower in hot water. Have Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) lotion if you can find it.

i'm currently taking 8 claritin (loratadine) per day. it's entirely gotten rid of my allergies. am i harming myself by doing this? will it damage me long term?

Yes: This is an extremely high dose, and you won't benefit on the long or even the short term, although claritin (loratadine) is OTC, it doesn't mean you can overdose without a problem, you're personally liable and should follow the instructions carefully. As for your allergies, which I don't know their nature, there are other ways to control. Check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist in your area, good luck

my allergy medication is no longer working. how long should i wait after stopping daily 10mg loratadine doses before switching to daily 180mg fexofenadine doses? i've read that don't want to mix anti-histimines, so is a wait period necessary?

: You can stop loratadine today and start fexofenadine tomorrow. You should not use them in combination, such as using loratadine along with certirizine or fexofenadine or benadryl or hydroxyzine at the same time.

Unexpected: If you mean swelling which lasts hours at a time, it is not from water retention and is called angioedema.   Water retention tends to be most noticeable at the legs and ankles and would dent if you press your finger against the area.   Claritin does not relieve water retention but may reduce angioedema and yes it has a longer duration of action than benadryl (diphenhydramine).

is long term use of benadryl for environmental allergies safe for children? claritin does not help but benadryl gives her relief. she needs it once to twice a day and does not seem affected by drowsiness, but there a better alternative to consider?

: I find the once or twice a day use of children's Allegra effective and more convenient for some. It comes is liquid and tablet form.
