Yes, but...: Bacteria are living creatures, like the rest of us. Viruses are missing some parts so are not living unless they are inside another living creature. Viruses that are by themselves are dormant like seeds or spores, waiting to be reactivated. In a general sense, it is fine to think of viruses as living things, but technically speaking, they are not independently living when alone.

Absolutely: The most common cause is lack of exercise, followed by alcohol overindulgence.  Other causes (diabetes, hepatitis c, several inborn errors of metabolism) have specific treatments.  I'm glad this was discovered, as it can become serious, but as long as cirrhosis hasn't supervened (which is a miserable way to die), you can probably take charge of your own recovery and enjoy doing it.

Improve the odds: There are no guarantees, but you can improve the odds of living a long life by eating healthy organic foods (LOTS of vegetables and fruits, especially, and little, but some, carbohydrates, meat, and dairy), exercising regularly (aim for one hour or more a day), avoiding tobacco and other artificial poisons, and getting routine vaccines and proven medical screening tests.

Not easy: You may have to be the one to modify your behavior and perfectionism is deep seated and hard to lessen.  You might see the play "the odd couple" - also a movie, - to see perfectionism at work.  Perfectionists can accomplish much so while it gets in the way at times, it can also lead to breakthroughs and excellent work.

Plenty: Age 66 is now a very common age.  Assuming that health is not an issue and that you are in crisis like living on the street, there are plenty of things possible.  You can engage in activities to help your fellow humans, volunteer for charities, get politically active, get serious about your church, travel, take courses - the list goes on and on.

could a person live without the dura matter?

Not for long.: Not for long unless only a small area is missing.  Dura can also be replaced surgically.  The dura is needed to protect the nervous system from infections, inflammation, and contain the cerebrospinal fluid.  The dura also has a role in the brain being able to auto-regulate its own pressure and blood flow.  Without these features, one would not live more than 1-2 weeks if there were a large  defect

Possibly: It depends on things like where they were shot, the type of bullets used, their base-line health, blood loss and available health care/ emergency treatment.
