Should be avoided in pregnancy.  Li is processed by the kidneys (not liver).  ½ life is 24 hours.  Effective serum range is .6 to 1.2 meq/l. Toxic range starts at  ~ 1.5 meq/l. Treatment for toxicity is supportive.

It is best to work with your physician to monitor any side effects of lithium. Lithium is quite beneficial though for those with bipolar or if it is used as an adjunct to treat major depression.

Lithium carbonate: Adverse effects aren't frequent below a serum level of 1.5 meq/l.  Your doctor will be monitoring your dose and blood levels. Diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, muscular weakness, and lack of coordination may be early signs of lithium intoxication.  Long-term, thyroid and kidney function may be affected.
