Accepted Answer

Lemon: No. Go to NIH.gov and read about. DASH DIET. My record pt wt loss is 140 lbs. just set calories you need to eat to lose weight, follow that goal. Never fails.  But check with team.  If OK do the DASH.

are there any over-the-counter drugs or vitamins/supplements you recommend to prevent altitude sickness (i'm an avid skier)?  and yes i know all about drinking water and avoiding alcohol.

Dramamine (dimenhydrinate) tablets. : Ask the pharmacist , they will show you the choices. I believe dramamine (dimenhydrinate) is otc.

No: And for good reasons. Unsupervised use is dangerous.

Not a good idea: It's not good to take diuretics just because you're swollen or feel 'bloated, ' and you can't get them over the counter in the United States.  If you have swelling in the feet you should find out why. Causes include heart disease, kidney disease, and peripheral vascular disease (venous insufficiency).  If it's the latter, sodium restriction, leg elevation, and support stockings are best.

Iodine tablets: A campers best friend. Add 2 20mg tabs of tetraglycine hydroperiodide per quart of water and wait 30 minutes.

GREAT QUESTION: I am always amazed at even the number of colleagues who do not educate their patients on this very very important point.  YES....there is a huge relationship between the PROTEIN CONTENT of a meal and the absorption of carbidopa/levodopa.  If a meal has more than 30% of its caloric content in the form of protein then, this will significantly hinder absorption in the gut of Sinemet (carbidopa and levodopa).  Therefore,.....

Eval: You could have an infection. At this point, medical assessment is indicated. If you have an infection than antibiotics may be necessary.

Bloating: Gas buildup may result from lactose or gluten intolerance or from intake of heavy fiber or carbonated beverages in your diet. Also air swallowing by making yourself belch leads to even more bloating. When bloated, drinking hot water breaks down the gas bubbles and enables proper passage via rectum and not by belching. Take the gas x one half hour after eating to prevent gas buildup.

Oh my, diuretics are: Not the right way to start a weight loss program.  Often, this can lead to laxatives, then inducing emesis, starvation or over- exercising.  I would encourage you to drink at least 8  - 8 ounce glasses of water per day (not diuresing off your fluids).

Bacterial flora :      Gas, bloating and heartburn often develop from similar causes that people can address, reduce or eliminate to bring about relief.
