why do i have limited jaw movement after wisdom teeth extraction?

Duration important: If you have limited jaw opening right after the surgery, that is not uncommon.  It could be due to the novocaine injections or the stretching of the mouth on opening to accommodate extracting the teeth.  Sometimes the injections can create muscle spasms.  If you had limited opening prior to the surgery, you may have a aggravated tmj/tmd issue.  I would call the  dentist/oral surgeon office.

Perhaps: You could have limited motion due to that history but there could also be other restrictions. An osteopathic physician or physiatrist might be a good place for you to start to discover your restriction and discover he best treatment options.

my jaw on the right side is painful when touched.  the inside doesn't hurt and movement or clenching doesn't bother it.  what should i do or look for?

Parotitis: You could have inflammation in your parotid gland, which produces saliva. Ibuprofen (if safe to take for you) is a mainstay of treatment.  There are a number of causes of parotitis, but viruses are the most common.

Oral surgeon: Jaw dislocation or severe temporamandibular joint dysfunction appears likely. Consultation with an oral surgeon is recommended forthwith for diagnosis and treatment.

Couple possibilities: One possibility is a fracture of the jaw bone.  It could occur a couple of different places and is only going to be evident on an x-ray.  Another possibility is a dislocation in the tmj.  You may need to see an oral surgeon for either of these problems.

Possibly: Dysfunctional jaw joints can account for your symptoms, but so can other things such as infection, trauma, fractures, etc.  Please see your Dentist to see if dent-facial cause exists.  If not , review by your Physician may be in order.

Nerve pain: Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia which nerve related pain agrrevated by jaw movement. You need to see a neurologist.
