Depends : most surgeons agree that maximum strength of your repair reached in 6 weeks.  Some surgeons allow laparoscopic repairs to lift normally right away,but limited data to support this.  I say wait 6 weeks for heavy lifting otherwise no restrictions to reduce recurrence risk.  If gas bloat caused by surgical induced CO2 it will be gone in 72 hours

why would it be best for an open hernia repair?

Accepted Answer

Surgeon experience: Recurrence rates can be higher in laparoscopic surgery based on the degree of experience and techniques used.  Often a "bilateral" or both sided repair can be done via small incisions.  If it's only one sided, the "extra" dissection during laparoscopic surgery of the opposite side is unnecessary and may pose potential for additional scarring.

what are signs that someone is having a reaction to the mesh used in the hernia repair?

Accepted Answer

Non-reactive: Mesh used for hernia repair does not cause an immune or allergic reaction.  Your body does respond to the mesh by forming scar tissue and sending inflammatory cells to the area. If this normal response is excessive, you may have pain at the site. If there is red skin, may be an infection. Best to have it checked by your surgeon if you're concerned. Hope this helps!

Seroma: This usually occurs and i tend to see more of these when i repair these hernias laparoscopically rather than open.  This will usually resolve or improve by 6 weeks post-op.

Accepted Answer

No.: There are many different kinds of mesh available for hernia repair.  Some products are derived from animal products, or from cell culture products.  Each product has specific uses, so talk with your surgeon to see what meets your needs.

Accepted Answer

It can: Sometimes small sensory nerves are divided during a repair. This is especially true with an open repair. It is rarely a significant problem.

Accepted Answer

Yes: But wait until surgeon clears you to reduce chance of recurrence or bleeding.
Usually well healed in two months, or so.
I presume this is a groin hernia but the principle is the same for umbilical or femoral.

It depends!: In order to answer the question, you'd have to know where it was, whether it was the first one, how big it was, and how long you had it before the operation.  There are many factors!  the good news is that seromas do go away, although sometimes we need to treat them.

1-2 weeks: While it varies, return to work is often 1 week, even for moderately active jobs.

is age 72 too old to have hiatial hernia repair or i will be ok?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: Surgeons often perform hiatal hernia repairs on patients your age.  Whether you are a candidate depends on your overall health.  If you have significant reflux or pain you should consult with a surgeon who performs these repairs to determine whether you are a good candidate.
