does eating too much licorice cause diarrhea or black stools?

Yes, but...: Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like peptobismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in your stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn tarry ("melena"). Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums... Persistent melena (without obvious cause) & symptoms warrants md visit.

i have gerd and severe ibs (with diarrhea and nausea). i've taken iberogast (stw-5) before and it worked amazingly. but i'm concerned about licorice root in it. i have hypertension. is it safe for me to being using this?

It is unlikely to: contain a sufficient amount of licorice to have any affect on your blood pressure but it would be easy to monitor this. Buy a blood pressure cuff and record your blood pressures. If you find they are being elevated by the Iberogast then discuss treatment with your health care provider.

Not yet: Give it a few days. A viral intestinal tract infection or mild food poisoning will resolve on their own. Eat a soft, bland diet with no harsh roughage and drink adequate fluids. Use kaopectate or Imodium as needed. If symptoms persist or worsen a stool culture to check for pathogens is recommended.

What's the cause?: Not a weird question at all!  "plugging up" diarrhea will not cure an infection, fix an inflammatory process, improve an ischemic gut, or correct a functional issue.  Medical evaluation is recommended appropriate to the duration of your symptoms, associations (bleeding, weight loss, pain, vomiting), as well as your other medical co-morbidities.  Call your doctor please and get checked.
