Glycyrrhizin: Some licorice contains glycyrrhizin which has potential to cause side effects like numbness, muscular aches,  high blood pressure, fatigue, fluid retention, headaches and can effect the heart.  Licorice can interact with some medications as well.

Yes: Black licorice is a candy, and licorice root is a plant (glycyrrhiza glabra).  Black licorice candy contains glycyrrhizin, the compound made from black licorice root that's used as a sweetener. Glycyrrizin can cause body potassium levels to fall. There are de-glycyrrinated licorice supplements available, if using for that purpose.

Physiologically, Yes: By inhibition of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (type 2) and subsequent increase in activity of cortisol on the kidney. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase normally inactivates cortisol in the kidney; thus, liquorice's inhibition of this enzyme makes the concentration of cortisol appear to increase.

For what?: Red &quot;licorice&quot;is not real licorice at all, mostly high fructose corn syrup, red dye and artificial flavors. It has no health benefits and is actually toxic. Better quality black licorice, while also sugary, has real licorice in it, a medicinal herb with many health benefits, though it is healthier to use as a tea, tincture or tablet. Iron deficiency: Is most common, some say that you could be pregnant!  real black  licorice (the real kind, not not any other type of licorice, or artificial) is very metabolically active in the body so lots of things could be the cause.  Or maybe you just like it!

None: You do not need to increase cortisol levels if your adrenals are functioning normally. You only need to allow them to respond to physiologic influences.  Herbs will not help.  You would not want to artificially increase cortisol, if it were possible. That would cause cushing's syndrome.

Similar effects: A study showed that several isoflavans present in licorice affect the serotonergic system and inhibits serotonin re-uptake. That is also the mechanism of action of ssris. Thus, if you take them together you are overdosing yourself.
