i've been taking lexapro for 6 weeks. first week 5mg. then week 2 to current 10mg. i am going to stop taking it /would like a second opinion on how to?

Consult with PCP: I am not certain as to why you are stopping and your physician should be notified: I suggest 10mg day 1, 5mg day 2-3, and 5 mg every other day for 2 days, then stop.

i decreased my lexapro dose from 10mg to 5mg on 3/19 ... the 10mg was just too much for me. i'm wondering if i need to give the new 5mg dosage 6-8 weeks to fully work just like you have to do with an increase?

: It is curious why the 10 mg was too more for you. If it was effective then it likely was the correct dose. You probably have been on the 5 mg long enough to see if it is effective for you. It sounds not. You could start by increasing to 7.5 mg daily to see if that is of good benefit and follow-up with your doctor.

Lexapro (escitalopram): Yes you can but I cannot think of a good reason to do so. No problem with this

It depends: Medication efficacy depends on the symptoms you had when you started, and what you continue to have after the therapeutic window.  It is usually recommended that you give an antidepressant 6-8 weeks to see if it is working.  If your symptoms have not, or have minimally improved, a dosage adjustment is reasonable.  The usual therapeutic dose of Lexapro (escitalopram) is 10 mg.  But you have to give any med time.

Ask your doc: before making any moves on your dose. You need to report on any main effects or side effects during the first 1-2 weeks  that you are on any given dose. And yes, increments are by 5mg at a time :)

Ask the Dr: But you can also ask yourself. If at 6 wks you are not liking what you see, going longer only increases the length of time to taper off. If you are pretty pleased but hope for more, you might wait another week or so - but not if you're not happy. Discuss this sort of thing w/ Dr and in therapy. Best!

4-6 weks: Usually it takes about 4-6 wks for antidepressant to exert full effect. Some may few imptovement in about 2 wks but often takes longer to maximally benefit from it. By  4-6 wks if u don't feel any improvement, talk to your doc for possible add of med and/or change of therapy. Lexapro (escitalopram) is a good med, but does not work for everyone. Not the best idea: The 2 can potentiate each other and there is a possibility of serotonin syndrome.

SIDE EFFECTS: You could start with 5 mg but 10 is recommended. Don't look up all the side effects - you most probably wont get the most terrible ones, and the mild ones aren't much. If you do find a new development ask your dr about it. You may have to increase dosage until you feel better. Be a bit more trusting.
