: It is conceivable that giving blood from someone who has cancer with the cells floating around in the blood could get the cancer. Especially if the cancer is caused by a virus as in common in cats and chickens.   I have not read of such a case by you can go to PUBMED.gov and search the world's literature on this by entering cancer from blood transfusion in humans.  Let us know what you find.

Depends on lifestyle: The risk of aquiring an infection depends on the donor's health condition, and what behaviors he/she engaged in.  This is why people are screened before they donate blood.  They are checked for temperature, amount of iron, asked questions about general health, and have blood pressure taken.  The blood is even screened after donation for things like hiv.  Anyone with higher risk cannot donate.

You need a WORKUP: If you can go about your daily business, you don't need to be transfused, but I am VERY concerned that you have an unexplained anemia. Even at your age, it's a bleeding stomach ulcer or GI cancer until proved otherwise. Your physician needs to take a good history, including pregnancies / monthly loss. If you're a vegetarian and not supplementing, you'll need to start. Look for treatable disease.

Be a healthy adult.: You will be asked questions to be sure you are healthy, have not engaged in behaviors associated with viral illnesses like hepatitis or hiv, are not taking problematic medications and have not traveled to areas where malaria & other blood borne diseases are common.  You have to have normal blood pressure and pass a blood test to be sure you are not anemic.

Call the JW: In our hospital we have a good relationship with jehovah's witnesses.  They have specially trained people that will advise you about blood transfusion and the ways that you can sometimes get around having to have a blood transfusion.  These specialists will work with your doctor or hospital so that you and they are informed.  I would rely on your specialists in your faith.

Almost risk free: Alexis, i would have to say that blood transfusions are safe but not entirely risk free.  Those that donate blood are given a rigorous questionaire, and physically examined.  Then the blood removed is tested for all types of infectious disease agents including hepatitis and hiv.  The unit is then processed, stored under strict federal guidelines, and tested again before you receive the unit.

Hives and fever are nuisances but fairly comon. Blood is screened for the deadly infections including hepatitis b and c, HIV 1 and 2, and several other viruses using 21st century technology and the risk -- monitored carefully -- is extremely low.
