Not very likely: Although everything is possible, thrush is not a
common side effect of Lescol (fluvastatin) by any means;
an antibiotic could be a much more likely cause.
Lescol (fluvastatin) is a cholesterol lowering drug.

Accepted Answer

Ideally No: Lescol (fluvastatin) is used for high cholesterol.  There have been reports of fetal abnormalities and it isn't recommended.  Ideally we can get you off of Lescol (fluvastatin) before your pregnancy.  Talk to your doctor right away if you are takiing Lescol (fluvastatin) and think you are pregnant.

Statin - Fluvastatin: Lescol is the brand name for fluvastatin, one of several "statin" medications that inhibit hmg co-a reductase, the rate limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. These medications increase the number of LDL receptors that bind and remove LDL particles from the circulation. Statins have been shown to significantly reduce heart attack, death from heart attack, and ischemic stroke.

is it safe to take policosanol when taking lescol (fluvastatin)?

Accepted Answer

Should be: Policosanol is a herbal medicine allegedly helpful
in treating cholesterol related problems, just as Lescol (fluvastatin) is;i am not aware of any problems associa ted with the combination;but then policosanol has
not been that well studied in this country, so the
answer is uncertain;it could, conceivably potentiate statin side effects, such as heoatotoxicity as well as mypathies so caution is
recommended.

is lescol stronger than lipitor, (atorvastatin) crestor?

Accepted Answer

No: Lescol is weaker than those two. If your cholesterol level reaches goal, then it probably does not matter which statin you use. But if you require a higher dose, and do not reach goal even with high dose Lescol or other older drugs, then Lipitor (atorvastatin) or Crestor would be preferred. They are more potent. As they are about equally effective, price becomes an issue since Lipitor (atorvastatin) is generic now.

can you take policosanol while also taking lescol (fluvastatin)?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Policosanol is an Insulin sensitizing agent, used for Insulin resistance syndrome, or pre-diabetes, and raises the HDL or good cholesterol, while lowering LDL bad cholesterol.  The only interaction seems to be with levodopa, used for treating parkinson's disease.

years ago i took crestor (rosuvastatin) to lower cholesterol. i felt horrendous on it and stopped. recently i tried lescol and felt the same, awful. does that mean i can't take statins? what are my options here?

You can try others: Sometimes, there is a specific statin amongst the group that won't cause this.  Also can try coq10 which may negate side effect of a statin.

how can i tell if i have hives or a drug allergy?

Accepted Answer

Subtle: hives can occur as part of an allergy syndrome.  people with chronic hives or who have an inborn low threshold for hives have difficulty differentiating simple hives from drug allergy.  If the drug reaction is IgE-mediated, or occurs via a similar pathway without IgE, then one would expect additional symptoms other than hives (breathing problem, dizzy, nausea, swelling, headache, etc)

What is the context: Depends on what you are looking for. No simple test. There are specific tests for certain things (penicillin).  There are a few tests done to determine if an individual can tolerate a certain med (G6PD). Mostly, though, it comes down to trial of a med and knowledge  of what to look for. For example if you get a cough with ACE inhib (lisinopril) your DR will change you to ARB (valsartan)

can my unborn child be harmed if i have a drug allergy?

Accepted Answer

No: Having a drug allergy is only a problem if you are exposed to the  drug. If there is a severe drug allergy during pregnancy there is a potential for a problem. Avoid the drug to which you are allergic.
