Food: Assuming you mean greenish,  it most likely comes from having eaten something with green coloration added, like candy or a cough drop.

i awake some mornings with an extremely painful tongue. it is just the top that hurts. there is nothing out of the ordinary looking at my tongue.

Burning tongue: A painful tongue can be the result of dry mouth. If you are breathing through your mouth while you sleep the dryness can cause a burning sensation of the tongue. Try using biotene gel to coat your tongue when you go to sleep and see if this helps. If not, have your dentist or ENT check it to be sure there isn't another underlying cause.

White tongue: White tongue is usually due to material from food and drink that deposits in the tiny space between the papillae that make up the tongue surface. It is easily resolved by brushing your tongue when you brush your teeth in the am and pm. You can also use a tongue scraper.

Possibly nothing but: If you have just noticed these they may be enlarged taste buds, are normal and appear generally at the back top of the tougne however if they are new you should see your dentist asap.

The base of the tongue (where your question points) often has a nodular appearance due to the circumvallate papillae & the lingual tonsil. Nodular lymphoid tissue or linear webs may also be seen on the otherwise smooth surface of the valleculae.You sound normal, but a doctor's exam can reassure you.
