Many things : Can be the cause including a clot which is usually present in the calf region, tendonitis can occur, shin splints, stree fracture, poor circulation is a possibility but less common for your age group.

Swollen?: Did you injure leg? Overuse? Is it swollen? History of long travel or sitting for extended period or family history of blood clots? If you have these, I would see an MD.

Arthritis: There are a number of possibilities but the most likely is some form of arthritis of the knee.  Pain down the leg occurs in this condition due to the alteration of leg motion as you guard to protect the arthritis.  Try an NSAID such as 400-800 mg of ibuprofen (along with a stomach acidity counteractant like omeprazole), for a week or two ..  If that fails, see your family doctor.

Lower extremity pain: First of all, we need to know if there is a history of trauma. If there is trauma, you need x-rays and possibly an MRI and blood tests. If there is not trauma and this happened spontaneously, there are a few conditions that have to be ruled out. Pain has to have a source. Do you suffer from low back problems? Are you active in sports? Do you have circulation issues? We need a better history.

Heat: Sounds like a strain calf muscle, immmediately after cold is usually more beneficial and later on heat will help more.

Thigh leg pain: I would need more history to provide better advice. Perhaps an introductory web consult would be helpful. Di d you have an injury ? DOES YOUR BACK HURT? Any numbness or tingling ? Any swelling of your leg ? What  medications are you on ? Do you have other medical conditions thaT YOU ARE BEING TREATEd for?

I get this also: I use an ultrasound machine when this happens and the pain goes away almost immediately. Physical therapist should be able help. You  may want to increase your calcium intake also. Physiatrist  specializes in these problems, this is your best bet to get well soon

Outside Leg Pain: Pain in the outside of your leg between the knee and ankle can be the peroneal muscles (strained), the peroneal nerve (neuritis or radiculopathy), the fibula itself (stress fracture or stress reaction), or the joints connecting the fibula and tibia (sprains).
