Sprain: Could have sustained a mild sprain during the marathon that becomes apparent after  the marathon

Bruises can occur: in the legs without very much of an injury/without remembering what the injury was. They generally get better within a few days. Hot water bottle can speed resorption of blood.

Bee sting?: If there is a stinger in the area, please see your PCP for removal, apply a cold pack and watch for signs of infection such as pus, swelling and redness.

why do my legs give out after running for extended periods?

Fatigue?: Common reasons for giving out include 1) instability from ligament insufficiency or tear, 2) weak muscle from atrophy/weakness/muscle disease etc. 3) pain. After extended running its possible you are experiencing fatigue which prevents your muscles from properly firing and holding you up. Therefore you must be properly hydrated, conditioned and trained to undergo rigorous running.

Muscle strain: It sounds like you may be pronating at the level of the foot and creating muscle strain.
Try an orthotic in your shoe to stabilize your foot and ankle.

Blood tests: Make sure your basic CBC is normal. Purple spots may be small broken blood vessels, .

Muscle, neve,blood: Some things it can be but are not limited to include muscle fatique, exercise induced compartment syndrome, peripheral vascular disease, claudication (neurologic or vascular), myopathy, some medciations can cause muscle fatigue.

Lump in lefg : It really depends where exactly in the leg the lump is, the size, texture, color, how long its been there, if it comes and goes, etc.  Without a picture, need more descriptors to answer this question. But do not let it stop you from running.

Maybe: Dehydration, low potassium can contribute to cramping.  Try hydration, repletion with banana, oj.  Stretching, ice massages can help.  Consider venous disease as a cause, and seek serves of a phlebologist to evaluate the veins in your legs.

i had a what looked like a couple standard mosquito bites on my legs after running then they turned reddish/purple after a couple days. should i worry?

Accepted Answer

Possible allergic : you may have developed some possible allergic reaction. You can use some over the counter hydrocortisone cream twice a day for 3-5 days. It would be nice to send a picture.
