Nerve compression: Your symptoms sound like more than muscle strain and 
are consistent with compression or injury to the spinal cord or major spinal nerves possibly from a herniated disc in the lumbar area.  Without more information regarding location of your syringomyelia, it is hard to say if that is related.  You need to  be seen on an urgent basis and may need MRI.  Your neurosurgeon knows you best.

Possible CT Syndrome: Usually this happened mostly at night your hand wake you up and it is numb and you have to shake out, if that what happen most likely this a sign of carpel tunnel syndrome. Check it out.

Quantity vs Quality: While you're describing an adequate quantity of sleep, you may be suffering from poor quality sleep, for instance, sleep apnea, which can lead to inappropriate sleeping during the day. Numbness is more worrisome and needs to be evaluated by your Family Doc. If it happens again (especially w/loss of strength), call 911 &amp; get thee to an ER to evaluate for possible stroke (remember FAST).

Carpal tunnel?: Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness of the fingers...Usually the thumb, index, middle and one-half of the ring finger.
This problem is often caused by repetitive
movements of the hands or wrists.

NO: It is not normal for any part of your body to "fall asleep"-Assuming you mean go numb, during sleep. You are most likely sleeping on the body part and causing a nerve to get  inflamed and entrapped, thus causing the numbness/tingling.

See ortho: You need to consult an orthopedic surgeon about this I would guess that carpal tunnel syndrome would be one of the possibilities. The problem is likely at the wrists.

Carpal?: Well, common things being common,  carpal tunnel syndrome comes to mind.  A "neutral posiition splint" worn at night is a good place to start.  Best of luck!

problem neck/back: If both hands (the whole hand) have this recurrent issue, there could be something very wrong with your neck or upper back.  Nerve compression problems often manifest with numbness or pain in hands/arms.

Must be a reason.: Hands actually do not fall asleep without any reason.  There is a good reason but it cannot be known without understanding more about your symptoms.  When does it occur, when does it not occur? What part of the hand is affected? Is there any muscle weakness?  Is the r hand as affected as the left?  At the end of the day carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve injury are the most common causes.
