Risks exist: It depends what organ transplant is being contemplated. Organ donation is major surgery and you need a careful discussion of risks and benefits including the long term risk.  This should be done with members of the transplant team who know this information the best.

Varies by state...: "DonateLifeTexas.org" is one organization in your area that coordinates. Each state or region has a primary resource that is called by ER/hospital when someone dies. They coordinate talking to family / OCME-Coroner / surgery team / etc. Registries of persons needing transplants are kept locally &amp; nationally. They match up donor &amp; recipient.

Yes: You have the right to know any pertinent medical information about your potential donor.  Of you are not told you should ask and you always have the right to refuse an organ without losing your place on the list.

Depends: Deceased donors can be almost any age.  Babies need transplants too. For a living donor each center will have their own threshold but most have 19-21 as the lower limit.

Long-term Failure: To require an organ donation (needing a transplant) the organ in question must have irreversibly failed. The most common situation is kidney failure which requires dialysis or a transplant for the person to live. Diabetes and hypertension are the most frequent causes of kidney failure. Liver failure can be caused by hepatitis (B or C), fatty liver (from obesity) or alcohol overuse.

Everyone should!: I'm ER Dr, many people die despite best efforts in ER. Law requires us to ask family about donation, but often they don't know or can't decide unless help on driver's license listing "organ donor." If was automatic, COUNTLESS lives could be saved / prolonged / improved using donated organs after "1st owner" no longer needs them.
