why do they give you laughing gas and / or anesthesia for wisdom tooth extractions?

Pain/anxiety control: Local anesthesia is used to deaden the nerves in the area and insure the patient is physically comfortable during the surgery. Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is used in what is called conscious sedation to help patients be more relaxed during these procedures. It is also common to administer intra venous drugs to help with patient management.

Yes and No: Iv sedation can make you feel loopy following the procedure because it will take several hours ot work its way out of your system. Nitous oxide or laughing gas wears off very quickly once it it is removed.

i have a wisdom tooth extraction, but they only use laughing gas as anesthesia. i have had a bad experience with the gas because i still had pain. my question is, can i take a trazadon tablet and hour before surgery so i can be more relaxed with gas?

2nd opinion: If the practitioner you are scheduled with uses only anesthesia that has not been successful for you in the past, see a different specialist Oral Surgeon and discuss your anesthesia concerns. As you have anesthesia issues, make sure you are seeing a specialist.

Lethargic: You had surgery and anesthesia.  It's a stressful experience. ow your body is trying to heal.  You may feel somewhat lethargic for a few days, less so each day. If you have concerns, call the practitioner that knows you best, the Dentist or specialist oral Surgeon who removed your tooth.

Raspy voice: No two people react exactly the same to medication.  The rest in your throat may be due to the anesthetic, the procedure, extended time mouth breathing, or maybe you're getting a sore throat coincident to your surgery.  If you have concerns, call your treating Dentist.

No it is not painful: Laughing gas is useful to relax you, which can raise your pain threshold, but you will always have local anesthetic, numbing, so there won't be any pain.

Local anesthesia: Nitrous oxide does not numb up a tooth.  It is just a mild sedative.  Local anesthetic is always used to deaden the pain fibers for an extraction.

Depends on situation: Talk to your dentist about what kind of anesthesia he/she plans to use. Tooth extraction may be done with local anesthesia alone, meaning that the area around the tooth is injected with numbing medicine. Sometimes the dentist may use nitrous oxide. Most adults will do well with local anesthesia alone unless they are very anxious; children may need more sedation or anesthesia.

In addition to: Laughing gas will not numb you up and therefore it cannot be used alone for extraction of teeth. You will be given local anesthesia to completely numb you up and i agree that for most patients the additional use of laughing gas will give you a "floating" feeling that will relax you, get your mind off the procedure, make time pass more quickly and make the procedure an easier one for you.
