Causes include:  renal cyst (benign), anatomic variations (present at birth), certain infections of the kidney, hydronephrosis or partial blockage of the kidney, kidney tumors (both benign and malignant), etc...  The radiologist, the nephrologist (kidney specialist), and the oncologist (cancer specialist) can evaluate to get a diagnosis.

Need more info: What kind of scan? Renal Ultrasound, CT (with and without IV contrast), MRI, etc? What did report say exactly? Perhaps simple cyst? If so, nothing to worry about.

Not size: Size is not the issue here. A cyst on the kidney is a very common benign finding, can be small or large, & does not lead to cancer. A renal cell carcinoma is a solid mass, not a cyst, and could be any size from very small to large.

Cancer prognosis: Sorry to hear about the grim diagnosis. It's impossible to tell exactly high much longer without knowing the functional status of the person. 6 months is generic survival span in most cases, but it can be more or less than that depending on the aggressiveness of the cancer, etc.

You will need to get a biopsy of this mass in order to get tissue from it to arrive at a diagnosis. A urologist can obtain the biopsy from your kidney. If it is malignant, then an oncologist will be the physician to manage the problem.
