6mo post-op bunionectomy. big toe is still a little swollen and the incision area  is numb/tingly-i get same feeling up my leg as well (sometimes). ?

Accepted Answer

Thats normal: The numbness and the edema continues for sometime up to a year.  Keep the toe compress to milk out the edema.  Massage the toe with analgesic cream to loosen the scar tissue.

a doctor told me yesterday i do have a virus and not the flu. but have flu symptoms. today, i woke up with my skin (abdominal) feeling numb & that area feeling swollen. i can go back but i'm not sure if this is from the virus i have/getting over. ?

Follow UP: Maybe a different doctor would be able to check you out. Sometimes reassurance or in the past 24 hours things may have changed. Follow up with your doctor by phone .If still not feeling better go to Urgent Care or ER. The numbness usually does not go with flu symptoms. Alot more information needed to advise.

Exam needed: This should be examined by a physician for diagnosis and treatment especially in view of swelling and redness which are often signs of infection(cellulitis). Another possibility is a swollen bursa which can also be infected.

Parasthesia: Are commonly due to neuropathy which could be cervical or carpal tunnel or diabetic. Need further evaluation

Right numb/ swollen: Could be impingement from  a nerve like thoracic outlet or vascular occlusion either artery ( your hand would be cold ) or vein, or could be lyme  if in your area,  or shingles or  herpes or rarely MS , autoimmune or vascular brain issue. F/u/ w/ doc /ER /urgent care today.

Hard to figure: No specifics on area of body, but I'll be generic.  A nerve injury recovers in 3-4 weeks if the myelin insulation is solely affected, and if central axon (wire) is involved, grows back at 0.1 mm/day, speed of fingernail growth.

Edema: if this is of new onset  and you have recent symptoms Id advise a visit to your doctor to assess your blood work and other parameters that could cause edema and numbness  you have given very little clinical  material for us to work with

Heart Failure: Swollen ankles and feet is often a sign of congestive heart failure. Please go see your doctor urgently.
