: No, those symptoms are not correlated with carotid artery stenosis. The ischemic stroke due to carotid artery stenosis causes unilaterally symptoms (loss of motor and/or sensory function) from the opposite side.

TIA and Stroke: The brain needs oxygen to function properly and that oxygen is delivered by your blood.  If you are not getting enough, the brain may suffer leading to dysfunction such as weakness, speech problems or worse.  This can even lead to a stroke if the lack of flow is severe enough.

Likely other cause: The "thinners" reduce clotting, not "water down" the blood. It can increase risk of bleeding in the GI tract, which can cause anemia (alternate kind of "thin" blood), which can cause what you describe--see your dr for exam and blood / stool testing.

Doubtful: A standard CT scan of the brain would have challenges in determining inner ear issues or blood flow per se.  Additional modifications would be needed for the latter (along with the appropriate clinical symptoms), and other types of scans would be better for evaluation for the former (e.g. MRI, again, with the appropriate symptoms).

i woke up with a sore neck and numb head from the position i was sleeping in. did this position cause lack of blood flow? brain damage?

Accepted Answer

No: You probably pinched your occipital nerve which does not affect blood flow.   I would get a better pillow, only sleep one one pillow and if you have no stomach problems try some ibuprofen 600 MG very 6 hours for a few days.

If you have had any sort of injury, whiplash or head injury in the past you should see a dr and be examined.

Nerve Compression: Likely you are compressing your occipital nerve, particularly if lying on your back causes the symptom. The numbness in the back of your head may be on one side or both.  Repositioning to take pressure off the nerves should lead to slow return of sensation. Compression of this nerve will not affect brain function. If you are unsure, or your symptoms seem different from this, consult your doctor.

The long term effect: of "reduced" CBF due to TEMPORARY constriction of the  vessels (as in migraine) are not really known but several studies have shown that even severe chronic migraine does not reduce flow sufficiently to damage brain cells!

Temporary stroke: the brain needs oxygen and blood to work even a brief interruption causes dysfunction. Depending what part of the brain, different things happen:
Motor problems of one side, unequal pupils, particular TYPES of balance issues (dyscoordination one side more than spinning), difficulty speaking, some odd thought dysorders, vision in one side/one eye.
It comes back if the brain doesn't die.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Not likely ischemia (/lack of blood flow), more likely from irritation of nerves in area by inflammatory markers released by involved muscle tissues. Nsaid, cool compresses, and massage /stretching can often help relieve. If not improved in a week, see dr, as may need muscle relaxant or might be from other cause. Good luck!
