Surface dryness: The purpose of the blink is to spread tears across the surface of the eye to keep it properly wet.  If you can't blink the surface of the eye can dry out causing severe infection, ulceration and even the loss of vision.

Don't!: If you created a corneal abrasion by contact lens abuse do not expose your eyes to tap water.  It contains bacteria and possibly an ameba that can cause severe corneal ulceration and vision loss.  See an eye md immediately!

Unable to blink: Blinking  is primarily  involuntary shutting /opening of eyes.  Lack of blinking can be seen in different medical conditions (i.e., catatonia).

Several causes: Nerve problems like bells palsy, vii cranial nerve palsy, and parkinsonism are the most likely and common causes of poor blinking or inability to close the eyes. Patient should see an eye md for diagnosis and recommendations.

Lack of lubrication: Your tears act like the oil in the engine. They lubricate the surface of the eye with t= a combination of water, oil and protein.  The proper balance of these three componant is necessary for the proper lubrication.  When the eye is dry, the lubrication does not occur and the eyelid surface sticks to the eyeball surface.  The blink becomes painful by scratching the corneal surface.
