Non operatively: .Start by avoiding prolonged positioning &amp; any repetitive twist or bend maneuvers.  If you had physical therapy , resume those exercises.  Use of otc medication will help control symptoms.  Cardiovascular workouts may help except for rowing &amp; maybe running. If you did not have physical therapy, you may want to get a session to learn  back core exercises.

Possibly: I would use the epidural to target the nerve that appears to be irritated based on your question.  Annular tears can result in back pain, but epidurals may or may not help.  Overall they are safe procedures and it would be worth a trial.  Injections should be done one at a time and not in series without re-evaluation.  They should not be done unless you have had a trial of physical therapy first.

Annular tear: a disc is like a jelly donut. a herniation means the jelly is squirting out. An annular tear means there is a crack in the donut but the jelly stays inside. Annular tears often lead to back pain especially with sitting.
