See your doctor: You could have a host of issues that could cause your knee pain, could be bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, ligament issues, meniscal injury, sciatica etc.  So you may want to see an orthopedic pain specialist that can tell you what is going and help you with the latest treatments or exercise therapies available.

Exercise : On the surface, what you are describing maybe as simple as patellofemoral syndrome. Females are much more commonly affected due to the geometry of the pelvis and how it affects the tracking of the knee cap when you move. I would ofcourse see a physician to be sure, but start with exercise.

You should: Get evaluated by a clinician to determine what, if any, X-rays are indicated.  Medically warranted imaging would not result in excessive radiation.
