Primary enuresis: It is believed that enuretic children  have   delayed cortical maturation for voiding control,  are deep sleepers,  and often have positive family history.  Seek a medical attention.  Oral DDAVP (desmopressin) and  bedwetting alarm are options available.

Setting limits: Children always test us- it's their job! Our job as parents is to set limits. Talk with her before bedtime about sleeping in her own bed. When you put her down, and she comes out, put her back in her bed. Don't spend much time- just tell her "the rule is you need to stay in your bed". Be consistent and she will understand that you mean what you say. It takes time, but usually gets better.

Change the emphasis: Kids often migrate to their parents bed causing loss of sleep for all. I would change your focus to keeping them in their room.They can sleep on the floor or bed, whatever.I let them keep their door open if they stay in their room& close it if they don't.Explore scary issues & resolve them but be firm.Give them a big boy/girl reputation to live up to but return them each time.

See your doc: Start with a complete medical evaluation, this could be from some previously overlooked medical condition.  If the child is in fact healthy, and over 5-6 years of age then hypnosis is a great therapeutic approach.  Medicines will help temporarially but the bed wetting resumes as soon as the meds are stopped.

When they climb out: The easy answer is when they learn to climb out of their crib. Some toddlers learn early and some never try and climb out. Once they do, it is safer to have them in a bed low to the floor. That can be a toddler bed or just a low bed with a rail to prevent falls. I always say the longer in the crib, the longer you sleep!

Sleepy Children: Just like adults, kids need a calm, quiet environment to go to bed at night. It's important to set good sleep habits in kids and follow a routine. This can include no eating after dinner and setting and sticking to a bedtime. Try turning off the tv an hour before bed and reading a book to a child, giving a warm bath (i love johnson's lavender baby bath!), warm milk or soft singing. Best of luck!

Pets : Pets can be a great comfort to us - especially when we're not feeling well.  As long as the child does not have allergies or asthma associated with the pet, then it's likely not a problem.  If the child is not used to a pet in the bed and the animal is keeping the child awake, then you may also want to move the pet out of the room.  (my dog woofs and runs in his sleep which means he gets to sleep in the living room, not the bedrooms).

Alarm clock: After the age of 8 it may be worth using an enuresis alarm clock.  This alarm clock goes off when the pt gets wet.  It works over time, training the patient to feel their bladder filling up.  Make sure the child does not feel humiliated, it is not their fault.  10% of 10 y/o still wet the bed.  Other techniques like limiting fluids at night, punishing pt will not help.

Needs evaluation: The cause can include a kidney defect, bladder too small or infection, immature sensations and more. Chronic constipation can also play a role. Only after a good evaluation by the kids doc can you move to treatments. There are meds for short term help, wetting alarms that train the kid, and bladder scheduled emptying  that may all help over time.
