We don't know: While Mederma is especially formulated for scars, it really hasn't been compared to other products in well-designed controlled studies. In my opinion, there are other products like my grandma's favorite, cocoa butter, which work (some people think it's not even what you put on it, but simply the act of rubbing something moisturizing into the scar).  But scientists like studies not opinions.

Keratosis pilaris: is a common skin condition that causes rough patches and small, acne-like bumps, on the arms, thighs, cheeks and buttocks.  These bumps do no generally scar unless they are traumatized by excessive scratching.  Dark spots that may remain after resolution or treatments usually fade on their own over time.

using the bio oil would not be a good idea--this may cause more problems.

Follicular plugs: Keratosis pilaris is plugging of hair follicles, typically on the upper arms and thighs.  It is thought to be in the spectrum of atopic dermatitis (or eczema).  The roughness can be reduced temporarily by amlactin lotion, which contains 12% lactic acid.  Unfortunately, there is no cure.

Improvement: This condition cannot be totally cured but can be attenuated.  There is an excess of keratin in your hair follicles which accumulates for no known reason.  Warm soaks can soften it and mild loofah type scrubs can minimize the appearance.  But it does not respond to the usual topical medications and will recur so you have to keep at it over time.

Keratosis pilaris: Kp is a genetic disorder which causes small stiff plugs of skin to form in hair follicles usually on the backs of the arms sometimes on the sides and sometimes even on the flanks. This problem is a hereditary one which is not curable. Most people learn to live with this problem, and some use of softening lotion with Lactic Acid or urea and sometimes that helps a little, but it never goes away.

No "cure": It is not a condition can be cured but can be under control. Dry skin and genetic link are the main causes of this condition. Dry skin can be an inherited condition, and weather (like, winter), living environment (like, in dry desert regions) and personal habit of skin care (like, never use moisturizers) all aggravate it. You can't change that.

Skin hydration: (regular application of mild lotion, such as cetaphil) may help with the roughness of keratosis pilaris, but often it requires specific therapy.  There is no known way to completely prevent keratosis pilaris.

No: Keratosis pilaris is treated with chemical peels, waxing will not help you.
