Myeloma Tests: Testing for myeloma includes serum protein electrophoresis (spep) with immunofixation, free light chain kappa/lambda ratio, upep, beta-2 microglobulin, ig's, other lab tests; bone marrow biopsy, skeletal survey.  Other tests may include MRI of spine/bone marrow, pet/ct. Bmb tests: fish, cytogenetics, pcli (at some centers), gene expression profiling (gep).  Other research tests may be done.

Multiple Myeloma: I had not heard of "kahler's disease" until seeing multiple questions on healthtap.  It is multiple myeloma (mm). "multiple" is from the often seen "multiple" bone lesions (especially in advanced disease).  Mm is a cancer of plasma cells [highly specialized b white blood cells (lymphocytes)] that produce antibodies. Sx are crab: hypercalcemia, renal insufficency, anemia, bone disease; & infection.

Myleloma Tx: I've never called multiple myeloma "kahler's disase" but -- http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/multiple_myeloma -- wiki confirms.  The treatment options for multiple myeloma have become more complicated due to the number of new drugs in myeloma. This is a good thing. In general we look at transplant eligible or ineligible and personalize therapy based on risk factors.

Yes: There are not a lot of people because this disease hits those over 60 more often but we have had patients in their 20's with multiple myeloma, a very few who were also pregnant.

Accepted Answer

It is possible: Some forms of myeloma secrete a protein called a light chain that can invade organs like the heard or liver and cause it to function poorly. Most of the problems with the heart arise from many of the early treatments of myeloma which included a drug called adriomycin. Modern chemotherapy can still cause heart problems but not at the same rate.

: Both those diseases are mostly chronic and prolonged. It is difficult to diagnose them in early stages

Cancer: multiple myeloma is a malignacy of the plasma cells of the marrow.  It presents with bone pain and lytic lesions usually diffusely invoving the spine.  It is very effectivey treated with newer chemotherapeutic agents.

Unknown/MGUS: The exact cause of multiple myeloma is not known.
Myeloma is almost always (?Always) preceded by monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (mgus).

Risks: age, male gender, black race; radiation, benzene/petroleum exposure

laboratory studies can help predict risk of conversion from mgus to myeloma.

Palliative: To maintain quality of life and to increase survival. Treatment may relieve the symptoms related to myeloma and to prevent further damage/ possible organ failure ( kidney failure, symptomatic anemia, fractures etc ) that are related to the myeloma and ultimately is to increase survival
