That is part, yes...: Temporomandibular joint pain can come from several possible sources.  The joint capsule itself contains ligaments, tendons, and a cartilage disc.  The surrounding muscles which facilitate movement are very often the source of pain secondary to clenching, grinding, or "bad bite" issues.  This is something a dentist can and definitely should evaluate for you.

Pain in jaw: Is the pain sudden, or is it a jaw pain you get when you wake up? Was there a trauma? This jaw pain could be related to an issue with your tmj, clenching, grinding, etc. It is never a bad idea to see someone right away if you are concerned. It is better to hear there is nothing and to go home, then to hear i wish you came in earlier. See a dentist or if you are concerned go to er.
